Tryout FAQs:
What will we do at tryouts?
Wednesday & Friday we will have clinic days where our graduationg seniors will work to practice tryout material (cheers, dances, jumps). On Saturday, you will perform in groups of 3-4 in front of the judges for a final tryout score.
When will I find out if I made a team?
Tryout Results will be posted on the website by 8:00pm on Saturday April 18th.
If I am traveling this summer, can I still tryout?
Yes. While Summer practices are very important for our success, they are excused for travel prior to Aug 1. You are expected to attend as many practices as you are in town for during June/July to make sure we are prepared for the start of season.
If I put JV and Varsity on my application, are you going to put me on JV?
We know that everyone’s top team is Varsity. However, if you only select varsity as a 9-11th grader, and do not score high enough for that team, you run the risk of not cheering at all. We highly encourage you to put all teams you are eligible for. (Reminder: 12th grade students are only eligible for Varsity.)
Do I have to have tumbling or stunting experience to be a cheerleader?
Tumbling is not a requirement for our teams. Stunting is a large portion of our Game Day Routine so all Varsity athletes should be involved in a year round strength training program and have stunting experience.
Can you cheer on more than one team?
Yes! You can cheer for any combination of teams. Basketball cheer tryouts will be held in August/September.
Can I quit after tryouts if I decide I don't want to cheer anymore?
Tryouts are a grueling process, and people WILL get cut. If you tryout, it is assumed that you are committing to the entirety of the season at that point. If you decide in July you don’t want to cheer, you have taken the spot of someone who really wanted it. So please be 100% sure you are committed BEFORE tryouts start. (If you are considering playing softball or volleyball, please talk with Coach B at the start of tryouts.)
What can I do to prepare for tryouts?
Start a workout program NOW! Cheerleading is more physically demanding than people realize. Start perfecting motions, do some research on what proper motions look like, and practice in a mirror or on video to see if you are doing it correctly. Get with friends to practice together! Pre-tryout material will be available March 24th and the rest of the material will be taught during tryout week.
If you think of any other questions, please feel free to send Coach B an email at katie.birkhead@gcpsk12.org!
